I perform a show called "Tales from the Attic", a collection of stories and songs from my life. I counsel folks, mostly around relationships and the issues that arise out of alternative life styles.

Event Details

Clear communication skills are essential to serving effectively on team, and active listening is fundamental of those skills.  It is a feedback process where the listener makes sure they understand the speaker, and that the speaker experiences being truly heard.  Active listening is the most important communication skill a team member brings to the participant as well as fellow team member.

Anyone who has taken Level 2 may attend the Active Listening day.  You don't need to intend to join team.  Many folks attend this day just to learn or bone up on their active listening skills.

Active listening is a skill that can be acquired and developed with practice. However, active listening can be difficult to master and will, therefore, take time and patience to develop.

'Active listening' means, as its name suggests, actively listening. That is fully concentrating on what is being said rather than just passively ‘hearing’ the message of the speaker.

Active listening involves listening with all senses.  As well as giving full attention to the speaker, it is important that the ‘active listener’ is also ‘seen’ to be listening - otherwise the speaker may conclude that what they are talking about is uninteresting to the listener.

Interest can be conveyed to the speaker by using both verbal and non-verbal messages such as maintaining eye contact, nodding your head and smiling, agreeing by saying ‘Yes’ or simply ‘Mmm hmm’ to encourage them to continue.  By providing this 'feedback' the person speaking will usually feel more at ease and therefore communicate more easily, openly and honestly
This workshop will provide the participants with training in active listening. It will also provide multiple opportunities to practice active listening with other participants and to receive feedback from experienced coaches.
